Crime is an evil of society that can be controlled but never totally eliminated. Just as much as I believe the same, some incidents disturb me endlessly. I feel angered and somewhere helpless as a citizen of my country.
The gang rape at Noida on 7.1.09 in one of the busiest malls in the heart of the suburb is a ghastly act that is hounding my mind ever since it happened. I wonder what the progress of society across the world really means- high rise buildings, fancy gadgets, a world moving faster than the speed of sound? Is not the progress of values and minds that should instead progress and give a more peaceful shade to our existence.
To top the matter, the kith of the accused believe, as per newspaper reports, that rape is no big a deal. No real crime. Where do we begin to debate this with mindsets like theirs? How much time will it take before they understand that their sons committed one of the most ghastly acts of mankind? How many more rapes will be committed by them before they learn?
It is not the size of the task of sensitizing such people that rattles me. It is the thought disparity between them and me that I find rattling. We co-exist, in the same country, in the same vicinity. With steepened security and police personnel patrolling every nook and corner, the real enemy is the ignorance and mindset of those people. Are there guns for them too? Are they laws for them as well?
